    Things to do in Tashkent

Author: Peter Kolesnichenko · Published: Jul 23, 2023

Welcome to Tashkent, the radiant capital of Uzbekistan. So many things to do in Tashkent, where ancient traditions intertwine harmoniously with modernity, an enchanting destination for travelers seeking a unique experience. From awe-inspiring architectural marvels and bustling bazaars to tranquil parks and delectable culinary delights, Tashkent has something for everyone.

    Chorsu Bazaar

One of my favorite things to do in Tashkent is to immerse yourself in the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of Chorsu Bazaar. It's one of the oldest and most iconic Soviet marketplaces in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Located at the heart of the city, this sprawling market offers a sensory feast for visitors, with its colorful displays, aromatic spices, and a lively ambiance that captures the essence of Uzbek culture.

As you navigate through the bustling aisles, you'll find a treasure trove of goods, ranging from fresh fruits, vegetables, and aromatic herbs to traditional textiles, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. Don't miss the chance to sample the local delicacies, such as the famous Uzbek bread known as "non or lepyoshki".

Engage in friendly banter with the local vendors, who are always ready to share stories, offer recommendations, and provide a glimpse into the daily life of Uzbekistan. Whether you're looking to shop for local produce, taste authentic Uzbek cuisine, or simply soak up the lively atmosphere, Chorsu Bazaar is a must-visit destination that will leave you with lasting memories of your time in Tashkent.

    Central Asian Plov Centre

The Central Asian Plov Centre in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, is a culinary haven dedicated to the beloved Central Asian dish known as plov. Plov, a flavorful rice dish cooked with aromatic spices, tender meat, and vegetables, holds a special place in the hearts and palates of Central Asians. This unique center celebrates the artistry and tradition of preparing plov, offering visitors an immersive experience into the world of this iconic dish.

As you step into the Plov Centre, you'll be greeted by the enticing aroma of simmering spices and the sight of skilled chefs crafting plov in traditional Kazan cauldrons. The Plov Centre is not only a feast for the senses but also a cultural hub, promoting the appreciation and preservation of Central Asian culinary traditions.

Indulging in a meal at the Plov Centre is a must-do for food enthusiasts and cultural explorers alike. Feast on a steaming plate of the fragrant rice dish, accompanied by flavorful side dishes and traditional bread.

A visit to the Central Asian Plov Centre is a delightful immersion into the rich culinary heritage of the region, promising an unforgettable dining experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the art of plov.

    Tashkent Metro System

The Tashkent Metro System is a must see when in Uzbekistan! Not as famously known as it's sister Metro Stations in Moscow and St Petersburg, nonetheless just as impressive!

The train stations themselves are architectural gems, blending Soviet-era influences with traditional Uzbek design elements. Taking a page out of the Soviet Palace of the Peoples, be prepared to spend 2 hours riding around and looking at all the stations. Here are my favorite metro stations you must see!

    1. Kosmonavtlar - Named in honor of the Soviet cosmonauts who played a crucial role in space exploration. Adorned with beautiful cosmic-themed mosaics and captivating artwork that depict astronauts, rockets, and celestial bodies.
    2. Mustaquillik Maydoni - Translates to "Independence Square" in English. The station features spacious platforms adorned with exquisite marble and ornate chandeliers, creating a sense of opulence and grandeur.
    3. Alisher Navoiy - Inspired by the rich heritage of Uzbekistan's artistic traditions. Adorned with exquisite ceramic tiles, intricate mosaics, and calligraphic art, showcasing the beauty and craftsmanship of Uzbek culture.
    4. Yunis Rajabiy - Named after a renowned Uzbek composer and conductor. The interior is adorned with vibrant mosaic panels, depicting musical instruments, notes, and rhythmic patterns, paying homage to the world of music.
    5. G'afur G'ulom -Named after the renowned Uzbek writer and playwright G'afur G'ulom. The station's interior features beautiful ceramic tilework, vibrant mosaics.

    Tashkent City Park

Tashkent City Park is an oasis in the heart of modern Tashkent. A perfect retreat for locals and travelers alike, providing a serene escape from the bustling city streets. Families can enjoy leisurely picnics, children can delight in the playgrounds, and fitness enthusiasts can partake in invigorating workouts amidst the peaceful ambiance. But it really comes alive at night!

    Tashkent city water fountain show

At the heart of the park, you'll find a charming lake, with its famous evening Tashkent City Fountain Show. Enjoy great views from Hilton Tashkent overlooking the park and adjacent Tashkent City Mall. Tashkent City Park is a destination that leaves you with great memories of your time in this vibrant Central Asian city.

    Hotel Uzbekistan

Hotel Uzbekistan, a renowned landmark in the heart of Tashkent, offers an incredible Soviet experience, making it a perfect choice for travellers seeking a memorable stay in Uzbekistan's capital city.

It's famous facade boasts a Soviet Brutalist design. Its prime location and delicious breakfast buffet promises a memorable stay for both leisure and business travellers. Hotel Uzbekistan is a true gem in Tashkent.

The hotel's central location also offers easy access to museums, theaters, and other key sights, allowing you to explore the city's treasures with ease. Whether you're strolling through the tree-lined streets of Tashkent or enjoying the hotel's serene ambiance, Hotel Uzbekistan provides a comfortable and convenient base for your Uzbekistan adventure.

    Shopping in Tashkent

Tashkent is a modern city with modern shopping centres. The brand new shopping mall yet to be opened will showcase all the the high end western brands.

There are also other modern shopping centres across greater Tashkent such as the Riviera Mall. I love this particular one for its year round indoor ice rink and a dedicated kids fun centre with amazing dining options in the food court. It also has all your favourite brands such as Tommy Hilfiger and Swarovski Crystal.

You won't run out of things to do in Tashkent with this easy travel guide. But most of all, you'll love the people of Uzbekistan and their rich culture and history.
