Being Russian, I love anything garlic, especially this Garlic Sauce. I am convinced that my bodies craves garlic if I don't have it daily. Raw garlic is very healthy for you, but be warned about the strong flavor! Make sure all you friends are eating it with you, so you will be equally guilty of garlic breath.
What is a Doner Kebab?
The first time I tried a Creamy Yogurt Garlic Sauce was at a Doner Kebab shop here in Australia, I was hooked. Kebab shops are popular all over Australia and in Europe. Doner Kebab are made of meat cooked on a vertical grill, which are sliced thinly as it cooks. Usually beef, lamb or chicken. The meat is wrapped in a lavash bread or a pita, and lettuce, tomatoes and onions are added. Some people will add cheese, chili peppers, cabbage and other sauces.
They come from the Middle East and are known by different names and are made a bit differently. In North America, they're commonly called Donairs or Gyros. You might see versions of Shawarma, or even enjoy a Souvlaki in a Pita with this sauce.
How to make Garlic Sauce for Kebabs
Well this Yogurt Garlic Sauce is the hero of the kebab or shawarma for me. And it's not something that you can easily buy in the grocery store. Why would you? It's so easy to make at home. All you need is 3 ingredients, Greek Yogurt, garlic and lemon juice. That's it, and salt and pepper to taste if you like.
My only caveat is that it must be real yogurt and not a yogurt-like product. What I mean is real yogurt has no added gelatine, pectin or other thickeners. Buy an authentic Greek Yogurt that is Pot Set, meaning it thickens naturally in the same container that you are buying the yogurt in.
Read the ingredients label of the next yogurt you buy, you may be surprised. I stand by my statement that a commercially thickened soured milk product is not yogurt. So try to find the real thing when making homemade Garlic Sauce recipe. If you can't, then try to find a strained Greek yogurt. It's thicker, richer and creamier than plain yogurt.
What Else Can I Use Garlic Sauce For?
I always have a use for leftover Yogurt Garlic Sauce. When we have pizza, I love to dip the crusts into sauce. I hate dry pizza crusts. This creamy sauce is perfect as a pizza dip! If you have cut up vegetables, you can even use it as a veggie dip. Think of it as a Tzatzki Sauce, but without cucumber and with extra garlic! You could use this as a garlic dip your Potato Wedges in it, or enjoy along with your Lamb Kofta Kebabs, Chicken Souvlaki, Falafels or Meze Plates. Or just add some to your next burger!
The most common thing I make garlic sauce for, is when we make homemade Doner Kebabs. When we have leftover Greek Instant Pot Lamb Roast, I cut up the pieces for the next day. Buy some flatbreads, load with leftover lamb, lettuce and veggies, and generously drizzle with Garlic Sauce. This food takes me to my happy place! You can also use a roast chicken instead of lamb for a homemade kebab.
Creamy Yogurt Garlic Sauce is perfect for your homemade Doner Kebab, Shawarma, Kofta or Falafels. A Middle Eastern, flavor packed condiment, garlic dip or spread. So simple and delicious! Bon Appetit! Приятного аппетита!
