Nasi Goreng is a delicious Indonesian Fried Rice topped with a fried egg. You'll love this recipe because it's easy to make, has many variations to make your own and is economical. Everyone loves a fried rice recipe!
I learned this recipe when I was in Bali, Indonesia from a local family. This is the way they prepare Nasi Goreng. It's easy, uncomplicated, all you need is some Asian Greens, Chicken, leftover rice, Chili Sauce and Nasi Goreng Spice Mix, which you can buy or make yourself.
Ingredients
- Uncooked Rice - cooked in advance or leftover rice is best
- Asian Greens - chopped
- Nasi Goreng Spices
- Indonesian Chili Sauce - hot and sweet like ABC Chili Sauce (Sambal Pedas)
- Fried Chicken - served beside, or can chop and fry to mix with rice
- Vegetable Sides - Onion, sliced Tomato and ABC Chili Sauce and Ketchup
- Fried Eggs - to individually fry to serve over Nasi Goreng
How to Make Nasi Goreng
- Prepare Rice - cook rice according to instructions. Fluff with a fork, allow rice to cool on a baking sheet. For better results, refrigerate for a few hours.
- Slice Vegetables - slice Asian Greens into small bite size pieces. Thinly slice onions and tomatoes. Set aside.
- Mix Spices - if making homemade Nasi Goreng Spice Mix, combine spices together, and place in a small bowl.
- Fry Chicken - heat oil and fry chicken in small batches until cooked. Cover with foil to keep warm.
- Make Nasi Goreng - place cooked rice into a wok over low heat. Add through chopped Asian Greens and the Nasi Goreng Spices until combined and heated through. Mix through 2 tablespoons of ABC Chili Sauce thru rice.
- Sautéed Vegetables - fry onions in 1 tablespoon of oil until they start to caramelize. Add 1 tablespoon ABC Chili Sauce, 1 tablespoon Ketchup and sliced tomatoes. Cook for 2 minutes until heated through.
- Fry Eggs - in a frying pan, heat oil and fry eggs (sunny side up looks nice when serving)
- Plate Up - serve Nasi Goreng on a plate (pack rice in a bowl, level to the top and flip bowl upside down on a plate). Serve with fried chicken, a side of sautéed onion and tomatoes, topped with a fried egg. Garnish with chopped green onions.
Nasi Goreng Spice Mix
Easily found across South East Asia and most Asian grocers, however it's super easy to make yourself! If using store bought 20g spice mixture, then you will need 2 packets for this recipe.
- 2 Chicken Boullion Cubes
- 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
- 2 teaspoons Onion Powder
- 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
- 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
- 1 teaspoon Turmeric
- 1 teaspoon Lemongrass Powder
- 1 teaspoon Chili Powder
- 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
Fried Chicken Ideas
- Kentucky Style Fried Chicken - popular in Asian stores, a flour mix to dredge and fry crispy chicken, this is a family favorite
- Marinated Chicken - marinate in soy sauce, garlic and ginger for 30 minutes before frying in oil
- Chicken Strips - in a hurry? not traditional but easy to throw into the air fryer and serve alongside
- Chopped Chicken - sliced chicken breast or thighs and saute with onions. Then add rice, greens and spices.
- Try Seafood - skip the chicken and use prawns, fish and squid which is popular in coastal regions
- Change Protein - substitute with chopped bacon, beef, pork or tofu
Recipe Tips and FAQs
- Kicap Manis - an Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce that's often added when frying the rice
- Make it Spicier - add Sambal Oelek or drizzle with Sambal Kicap
- Leftover Rice - always the preferred option for any Fried Rice because it's more dried out and is less sticky
- Add Vegetables - all fried rice loves vegetables, use your favorites like peas, carrots, green beans, bell peppers or even some cabbage.
- Fresh Garnish - instead of frying onions and tomatoes, garnish with fresh tomatoes, sliced cucumbers with crispy fried shallots for texture, and with prawn crackers
Can I Make Nasi Goreng with Brown Rice?
Yes, just add extra cooking time to the rice to ensure it's properly cooked.
Can I Make Nasi Goreng in Advance?
While freshly made always has the best flavor, you can definitely make it in advance. Allow to cool and keep refrigerated before reheating.
Storage
- Fridge - allow to cool and place in an airtight container. Keep refrigerated and enjoy within 3 days.
- Freezer - place cooled rice in an airtight container or Ziploc bag with the air squeezed out. Place in freezer and enjoy within 3 months. Defrost in fridge overnight before reheating in a wok.
