Savory Sweet Potatoes are a delicious way to change up your dinner or holiday menu. An easy way to add vitamins to your diet, a delicious change instead of making plain mashed potatoes. Simple ingredients, natural flavors, you won't go wrong with this sweet potato recipe. I use a potato masher, but you can also use a hand blender for fluffier mashed sweet potatoes.
Sweet or Savory Sweet Potatoes?
So as you know by the name, this a Savory Sweet Potato Mash recipe, without any marshmallows, pecans or maple syrup in site. If you're not from the USA, that might sound weird. Those recipes are popular in the States, they are less known overseas. My sister loves the candied sweet potato recipes and makes them as one of her staples, but I just can't seem to get over the line to making a sweet side dish. I always default to savory. This rosemary and garlic mashed sweet potato recipe will perfectly complement chicken, turkey, beef or pork.
Fresh Rosemary or Dried Rosemary?
I always have fresh rosemary growing in the garden year round, and am always adding it to my recipes. When making special dinners like Christmas and Thanksgiving feasts, fresh rosemary is often bought for your roast chicken, roast turkey or roast lamb. Just save a sprig for this recipe. You can mix it through your sweet potatoes, but I usually just chop it up and sprinkle it when serving. That way, you get a flavor hit of rosemary with the garlic.
If you don't have fresh rosemary, then add some dried rosemary to taste. I'd add half a teaspoon into the mash. And remember, the fresh garlic makes the sweet potato mash taste amazing, don't skip the garlic!
How to Make Savory Mashed Sweet Potatoes
It's really easy to make mashed sweet potatoes! Peel and dice them into small cubes. Cover with water, bring to a boil and cook for about 20 minutes until they are soft. Drain and place in a mixing bowl. Add in the butter, whipping cream and fresh garlic. I start using a potato masher until the ingredients are all combined, and finished with an electric mixer, so the potatoes aren't lumpy and are fluffy. Season with salt and pepper, and garnish with fresh rosemary or freshly chopped parsley. After making this recipe, you'll never go back to plain mashed potatoes!
Are Mashed Sweet Potatoes healthy?
One of the best things about sweet potatoes is that they are high in antioxidants, specifically beta carotene which protects the body from free radicals. What does that mean? I have no idea except that it sounds impressive. I'm sure I don't need any of those pesky free radicals! Be sure to choose the orange and purple sweet potatoes for the most beta carotene. They are also high in vitamins and minerals such as iron, calcium, vitamins C and B and selenium. Plus there are the benefits of fibre. I'm told everyone needs more fibre! One medium sweet potato counts as one serving of your daily vegetable requirements, not like a regular white potato.
While the sweet potatoes are healthy, be aware of the level of butter and whipping cream in this recipe. Of course, that is what gives it the flavor! If you are looking for a calorie reduced side dish, this isn't it. To make this recipe vegan, use 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil instead of the butter.
Can I Use Yams Instead of Sweet Potatoes?
Yams are often used interchangeably with sweet potatoes. Sometimes it might be labeled a yam in the store, but it is actually a sweet potato. They aren't the same vegetable and are not related. Yams are starchier and more like a potato, and definitely not sweet. In the US, it's required that yams also be labeled with the words sweet potato. So chances are, you are not eating real yams. So for this recipe, yes you can use yams and make a Savory Mashed Yam recipe, which is a sweet potato (real yams work too).
