I love a tasty coleslaw, but it's the creamy Coleslaw Dressing that makes or breaks the salad. The rest of the recipe is basically cabbage, so you've got to get the dressing right! The coleslaw dressing you buy in the supermarket isn't very tasty, and it's expensive for what it is. It's so easy to make a coleslaw salad dressing, and you have all these ingredients already in your pantry!
Canadian KFC Coleslaw
I started to make this recipe as a KFC coleslaw dressing, sweet and tangy. However, not all KFC coleslaws have always been the same recipe around the world. When my wife moved to Canada from Australia, I took her to Canadian KFC, and when she saw the coleslaw, she asked "Why is the coleslaw fluorescent green? It was something that nobody had ever asked me before. Was the bright green KFC coleslaw in Canada really that different? In short, YES, but I think they are now in line with the rest of the recipes of the world.
Now that being said, I loved the fluorescent Canadian KFC coleslaw, and it took me years to get used to regular coleslaw. I have no idea how they make it bright green or flavor it so tasty. Some people say they add horseradish? So if you are looking for the Canadian KFC Coleslaw Recipe, this isn't it. I'm sure it comes out of some factory on a conveyor belt, with enough green glow to power a small city. Ok, obviously not, but I don't think a home cook can recreate Canadian KFC coleslaw. But what we can do is re-create the Coleslaw dressing made by American KFC's and enjoyed by the rest of the world.
How to Make Coleslaw Dressing with Mayo
There are many different creamy coleslaw recipes out there, some using tarragon vinegar, added horseradish or buttermilk. But seriously, those aren't staples at my house. I want to be able to make this coleslaw dressing when I'm in a hurry without buying fancy ingredients. There are people who use Miracle Whip, which would add a certain tang, but I always use either Hellman's Mayo or Heinz Mayo, as I find these have the best flavor for a coleslaw dressing. It's incredibly easy to make, simply whisk all the ingredients together and you're done!
Not a Sugar Free Coleslaw
It might surprise people that Coleslaw dressing has sugar in it, quite a bit of sugar. I think it needs sugar to balance out the blandness of the cabbage. If you are worried about the amount of sugar, put a little bit less in, maybe ¼ cup and adjust to taste. Don't skip the sugar, it's a key part of the recipe. If you want a sugar free version, add Splenda with the same ratio of sugar, which will help lower the calories.
The other secret to this creamy coleslaw dressing is adding minced onion. When adding the onion into the dressing, I put it through a garlic press. This ensures the flavor is there, almost like an onion juice, but without chunky, diced pieces of onion. This is my tip when adding onions to any salad dressing recipe.
How to Make Coleslaw
So this is a coleslaw dressing recipe, not a coleslaw salad recipe. However, coleslaw is super easy to make. It's basically a shredded cabbage with 2 grated carrots or carrots that are chopped in thin matchsticks. That's it! You can add a few more things to make it fancier, like a little bit of shredded red cabbage and green onions for color. Most grocery stores sell bags of freshly chopped coleslaw that's ready for you to add the dressing. That way, it won't be a soggy coleslaw.
This creamy salad dressing recipe also tastes great with my Asian Style Coleslaw recipe made with Napa cabbage and cilantro, a twist on plain coleslaw. Sometimes I use my homemade French Dressing instead of this coleslaw dressing. It's another way to make plain coleslaw more interesting.
