    How to Make Tomato Bruschetta

This is ridiculously easy to whip up together, the hardest part is chopping the ripe, delicious heirloom tomatoes. I always have a bit of fresh basil growing in the garden, add with a bit of garlic, onion and balsamic vinegar for the best summer appetizer.

You can drizzle olive oil on the baguette before or after grilling. It's tastier to add oil after toasting your bread to preserve the olive oil flavor.

    1. Slice the baguette bread diagonally. Place on a baking sheet and grill until lightly toasted. This will only take a few minutes.
    2. In a bowl, combine tomatoes, garlic, onion, basil, balsamic vinegar and mix together until combined. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    3. Drizzle Extra Virgin Olive Oil on the toasted baguettes, generously spoon the tomato mixture on top of each piece. Enjoy!

    Best Bread for Bruschetta

Baguettes sliced into round pieces on the diagonal, is the most popular way these appetizers are served. Find rustic bread, slice into smaller bit size pieces, that makes it easy to hold and eat. Here are some Bruschetta bread suggestions.

    • Sourdough - grilled or toasted
    • Crostini - little Italian toasts
    • Baguette - crusty French loaf cut into rounds
    • Focaccia Bread - sliced and toasted
    • Ciabatta Bread - a rustic Italian loaf

    Recipe Tips and FAQs

    Variations and Bruschetta Toppings Ideas

    • Caprese Bruschetta - add mozzarella to your bruschetta
    • Chicken Bruschetta - skip the bread, substitute with grilled chicken breast
    • Balsamic Bruschetta - add extra drizzle of Balsamic Glaze before serving
    • Shrimp Bruschetta - top bruschetta with grilled shrimp
    • Salmon Bruschetta - serve with smoked salmon for a seafood twist
    • Olive Bruschetta - add black olives for salty and tangy flavor
    • Ricotta Bruschetta - smear ricotta cheese on your baguette before topping
    • Prosciutto Bruschetta - layer prosciutto or top with crispy bacon

Can you make Bruschetta ahead of time?

Yes. Prepare the tomato and herb mixture and keep refrigerated. When you're ready to serve, just spoon the tomato mixture on the bread and you're ready to go!

Do I need to Seed the Tomatoes for Bruschetta?

Yes and No. It's not necessary to seed the tomatoes, as it's spooned on the toasted baguette and served immediately. The crispy bread can absorb some flavorful tomato juices. If you prefer, you can take the extra step to seed the tomatoes, especially if not toasting your bread.

Can you make Bruschetta with Canned Tomatoes?

Yes, using canned tomatoes is an economical way to enjoy bruschetta, especially when tomatoes are out of season. Drain canned diced tomatoes in a colander and mix in herbs and ingredients.

Yes, these may be simple but they -- and others like them -- are the reason I grow tomatoes every year. You can't go wrong using a freshly picked tomato on bruschetta, in a salad, salsa, or any number of ways.

I agree! Nothing complements food like garden fresh picked! Can't compare the flavours of home grown vs store bought! Thanks for checking it out!
