Ingredients

  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500 g lean ground beef
  • 3 teaspoons Montreal Steak Spice
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 red pepper, chopped
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup water or beef broth
  • 1 package potato gnocchi
  • ¼ cup whipping cream
  • cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 5 slices bacon, cooked crispy and crumbled
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a skillet or frying pan until hot and add the garlic and onion. Cook for a few minutes until it starts to caramelize. Add the ground beef and cook until the beef is browned and cooked. Season with Montreal Steak Spice and cumin. Add the chopped red peppers and fry for about 2 minutes until they start to soften.
  2. Add the can of diced tomatoes, water and potato gnocchi to the beef mixture in the skillet. Stir until mixed and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover with a lid and allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes until gnocchi is cooked and tender, and the mixture has thickened.
  3. Take it off the heat, mix in the whipping cream and ½ cup of cheddar cheese. Top with remaining cheese, bacon and chopped green onions. Optional: Grill under the broiler in the oven for 2 minutes until the cheese is melted.

Recipe Notes

Double the recipe for a proper family meal with leftovers for lunch the next day. If you don't have Montreal Steak Spice, add 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, ½ teaspoon paprika. If you are in a hurry and don't want to fry bacon, can substitute with Hormel Real Bacon Topping.
