Hot Chicken Sandwich recipe is a Canadian classic loved by many, and is so easy to make. It feels like you’re not really cooking, yet the family is happily eating! The first time I ever ate this was at was in a restaurant chain in Canada, in a city called Winnipeg (right in the middle of Canada).  The restaurant was called Swiss Chalet, and we didn’t have this chain on the west coast of Canada yet. I don’t remember anything particularly Swiss about it, but I remember their messy chicken sandwich, and would always order it when it opened in my town. This recipe is so easy, you don’t really need a recipe, it’s more an idea and framework for a great main meal. In Eastern Canada, this meal is traditionally served with green peas on top of the gravy on the Hot Chicken Sandwich, but I can’t stand boiled peas. If you are going the vegetable route, try my Fried Green Peas, which would be great with this Hot Chicken Sandwich Recipe. It’s best if you make homemade gravy, check out my homemade pepper gravy with juniper berries, for gravy that’s a little bit more interesting. You can always omit the juniper berries and make my plain gravy. If you’re in a hurry, its easy to buy gravy powder/granules. It’s quickest to buy a rotisserie bbq chicken from the supermarket, but if you have the time, you can always make homemade roast chicken. I always serve with fries or Roasted Potato Wedges, you could seriously get this meal done in about 30 minutes.  So many options, make it all from scratch or buy, mix and assemble. It’s really an easy meal to make, and it’s relatively healthy for fast food. Unless you add cheese to this Hot Chicken Sandwich recipe, which takes it to a whole other level, which I highly recommend. Maybe you need to balance this heart attack on a plate with a side of steamed vegetables. Bon Appetit! Приятного аппетита!

Recipe type: Main
Cuisine: Canadian
Ingredients
  • loaf of bread
  • rotisserie bbq chicken, shredded
  • 4 cups gravy - see my gravy recipe
  • a side of vegetables (optional)
Instructions
  1. Using 2 forks, pull apart and shred the meat from the cooked chicken. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the gravy. If making from scratch, allow for about 20 minutes to make the sauce (for your timing). Powdered thick gravy will work fine if necessary.
  3. Prepare 4 plates, placing 2 pieces of bread on each plate, like you are making sandwiches. It's not necessary to butter the bread, but you can if you want extra fat. Add shredded chicken pieces on a slice of bread. Spoon some of the gravy over the chicken pieces. Top with bread slice and cover with sauce. I use about ¾ cup of gravy per sandwich.
  4. Serve with roasted wedges or fries, and a vegetable...if you must!
Notes
Optional - Add shredded cheese on top of the chicken, before you add the gravy, hot melted cheesy chicken sandwich goodness.

    • Thank you very much! I’d like to thank the academy… Oh wait, I better check it out first! 😊

  1. Yum! Although it’s not just a Canadian thing. I grew up eating this. My family is Texan, although I’m a Coloradoan. 😉 It is also good of you out the bread down, then masked potatoes, then chicken & gravy with peas on the side!
